Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- Can I use the same charger for my starter battery and my house battery?
- Only if it is a multi-channel device that manages both banks independently. A single-channel device will only correctly charge one bank; the other will often be neglected or incorrectly charged.
- What is the minimum IP rating a charger should have on board?
- For indoor use on a boat, at least IP 44 is recommended; in areas exposed to splash water, IP 65 or higher is better. In the cockpit or engine compartment with direct water ingress, it should be even more robust.
- Do shore power chargers also work with a LiFePO4 battery?
- Only if the device explicitly has a lithium charging mode. Without a suitable charging curve, a LiFePO4 battery will not be fully charged and can be damaged in extreme cases – the manufacturer's data sheet provides clear information here.
- What is the best way to keep my battery in shape over the winter?
- A trickle charger that keeps the battery fully charged without overcharging it is the simplest solution. Before storing, clean the terminals, check the voltage, and leave the device connected to the onboard battery – that way you'll start in spring without any nasty surprises.
