Not all chargers are created equal

It's crucial that the charger matches the battery type – AGM, gel, and lithium batteries require different charging curves. A device designed for lead-acid batteries will, at best, not optimally charge a LiFePO4 battery, and at worst, damage it. So, before purchasing, check your battery data sheet.

Sizing: Not too small, not oversized

The charging capacity should be roughly ten to twenty percent of the battery capacity – this protects the battery and keeps charging time within a reasonable range. If you operate multiple battery banks, such as separate starter and house batteries, you'll need either a multi-channel device or a battery coupler. Don't forget to dimension cable cross-sections and fuses appropriately.

Take maritime requirements seriously

Onboard, the protection class matters: salty air, splash water, and vibrations can damage devices built for home use. Pay attention to adequate IP protection and ensure that the housing and connections are corrosion-resistant. Carefully consider the mounting location – as dry, ventilated, and accessible as possible for inspection and maintenance.

Regular maintenance pays off

Even the best charger is of little use if terminals are oxidized or cables are pinched. Check connections at the start of the season, clean battery terminals if necessary, and keep the battery charged over winter with a trickle charger – this significantly extends its lifespan.
