Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What buoyancy does a life jacket need for offshore sailing?
- For offshore and near-shore sailing in difficult conditions, life jackets with at least 150 N buoyancy, complying with ISO 12402-3, are recommended. For calm inland waters, a 100 N vest may be sufficient – but always check the regulations for your sailing area.
- How often must the cartridge of an inflatable life jacket be checked?
- Most manufacturers recommend an annual check of the CO2 cartridge and the release mechanism, as well as a full inspection every one to three years by an authorized service center. The exact intervals are stated in the manual for each vest – adhere to these, as expired cartridges can fail in an emergency.
- When do signaling devices such as flares need to be replaced?
- Pyrotechnic signaling devices have a printed expiration date and may no longer be carried as approved safety equipment after this date. Plan to replace them in good time before the start of the season and inquire with your local water police or authority about the proper disposal of old flares.
- Does a safety tether have to match the length of my cockpit?
- Yes, the length of the safety tether should be chosen so that you can move safely in the cockpit and on deck without being pulled overboard. Short tethers of about one meter or two-point tethers with different lengths are more practical for many boats than long standard tethers – measure your range of motion on deck before buying.
