What is the difference between a surface-mount compass and a flush-mount compass?
A surface-mount compass is screwed onto a surface and can be read from above – practical for many cockpit positions. A flush-mount compass is recessed into an opening and read from the front, which is more ergonomic for a direct helm station. Which one fits depends on your cockpit layout and available space.
How far must a compass be from electronic devices?
As a rule of thumb, maintain a minimum distance of about 30 to 50 cm from loudspeakers, electric motors, and larger metal parts. Smartphones and radios should not be placed directly next to the compass. If in doubt, check for deviation by comparing the device with and without potentially interfering objects nearby at a known course.
What does deviation mean and do I have to measure it myself?
Deviation is the error caused in the compass by stationary magnetic fields on board – for example, from the engine or steel parts. It varies depending on the course direction and can be measured by sighting known objects or by comparing with GPS course on several courses. You then enter the result into a deviation table, which you take into account during navigation.
Can I repair an air bubble in the compass myself?
In most cases, no – compasses are sealed and not designed for refilling by amateurs. Small bubbles that only appear when cold sometimes disappear again when warmed. If the bubble is permanently visible and impairs readability, a replacement is the more reliable solution.
