Can I use regular multi-purpose grease from the hardware store for deck winches?
Technically, you can apply it, but multi-purpose grease is usually not formulated to be waterproof and will quickly wash out in saltwater. Special winch grease stays in place longer and does not contain components that can corrode plastic or brass parts in the winch.
How often should I re-grease the stern tube?
That depends on the type of seal and the intensity of use. As a rule of thumb, re-grease at least once per season before the start of the season and check periodically for water ingress into the boat. Older stuffing box packings may require more frequent re-greasing.
Does silicone oil really not attack rubber seals?
Pure silicone oil is compatible with most common rubber materials and keeps seals pliable without causing them to swell. Nevertheless, quickly check whether the manufacturer of your seal explicitly recommends silicone products, as there may be exceptions for special plastics.
Can different greases and oils be mixed on board without problems?
Generally, this should be avoided. Different base oils and thickeners can react with each other, lose their consistency, or reduce each other's protective properties. Completely remove old lubricant before applying new lubricant; then the new product will work as designed.
