Drinking Water or Utility Water – This Determines the Material Choice

For drinking water, you need components with food-grade approval – this applies to hoses, tanks, and pumps equally. Utility water systems, such as for the deck washdown, have different requirements: Here, resistance to saltwater and UV radiation are paramount. Do not simply mix parts from both areas just because they look similar on the outside.

Pumps: Correctly Assessing Flow Rate and Pressure Build-Up

A pressure water pump should match the pipe length, the number of taps, and the tank volume. An under-dimensioned pump will run continuously and wear out prematurely. Also, pay attention to an integrated or separate pressure switch – it ensures that the pump does not run unnecessarily when no water is being drawn.

Hoses and Connectors: Tightness is Not a Given

In the marine sector, vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and tight bending radii are commonplace. Hoses should be kink-resistant and approved for the respective pressure range. Clamps, fittings, and connectors made of brass or stainless steel resist corrosion better than galvanized parts. Check connection points for leaks at the beginning of the season – small leaks often only become apparent when the damage has already occurred.

Maintenance and Winter Storage

Before winterizing, you should completely drain the system to prevent frost damage. Drinking water tanks and lines benefit from a thorough flush at the end of the season – standing water promotes germ formation. Regularly checking pump impellers and seals saves expensive repairs in the middle of the season.
