What makes a good traveler system?

Crucially, it's all about compatibility with your existing track – profile shape and width vary depending on the manufacturer and year of manufacture. Before ordering, it's worth checking the manufacturer's logo on your track or measuring its cross-section. Many travelers are designed for specific track profiles and cannot simply be interchanged.

Ball bearings or plain bearings?

Ball bearings run very smoothly under load and are ideal if you frequently adjust the genoa sheet while sailing. Plain bearings are more robust, are more forgiving of dirt and saltwater, and require little maintenance – a distinct advantage on long voyages or if the boat is in the water for extended periods. For most cruising sailors, a high-quality plain bearing system is the more practical choice.

Load and Dimensioning

The stated breaking load of a traveler should match the sail size and the expected sheet load. It's better to plan for some reserve here, especially if you're sailing in windy areas. Under-dimensioned travelers wear out quickly and can fail in extreme situations.

Care and Longevity

Regularly rinse the track and traveler with fresh water and wipe dry. Ball bearing systems benefit from occasional lubrication with a seawater-resistant agent – however, keep grease residues away from the track, as they attract sand and dirt and accelerate wear. A traveler that jams or snags is often a sign that the track is bent or dirty before the bearing itself is the problem.
