What diameter sheave do I need for my rope?
As a rule of thumb, the sheave diameter should be at least eight times the rope diameter. An 8 mm rope therefore needs a sheave with a minimum diameter of 64 mm – otherwise the rope will suffer and the block will run heavily.
What is the difference between the working load and breaking load for a fiddle block?
The breaking load is the value at which the block fails. The working load – often a third to a quarter of that – is the load you can apply to it permanently. When choosing, always consider the working load, not the breaking load.
Can I replace a ball bearing fiddle block with a plain bearing one?
Yes, provided the mounting dimensions, rope size, and working load are suitable. Plain bearings run just as reliably with lower loads and less movement, but require more force under high loads than ball bearings.
Which attachment type – eye, shackle, or swivel – is right for my application?
A fixed eye is suitable if the block always pulls in one direction. A shackle allows mounting to bolts or rails. A swivel is useful if the direction of pull changes significantly – it prevents the rope from twisting.
