What antenna gain do I need on a sailboat?
For sailboats, a gain of 3 dBi is generally recommended for the masthead. Higher gains focus the signal too much horizontally – when the boat is rolling, the connection noticeably deteriorates. On the other hand, a higher gain can be useful on the stern pulpit of a motorboat.
What coaxial cable is suitable for a VHF marine antenna?
For short cable runs up to about 10 meters, marine-grade RG-58 is sufficient; for longer distances or mastheads, it should be RG-8X or equivalent low-impedance marine cable to minimize signal loss. Household coax is absolutely not suitable.
Can I also use a VHF antenna for AIS reception?
Yes, VHF marine antennas operate in the same frequency range as AIS. With an antenna splitter, one antenna can be used simultaneously for the radio and an AIS receiver – however, with a slight signal loss on both devices.
How do I properly maintain a GRP marine antenna?
Rinse the antenna regularly with fresh water and check the connection between the antenna base and the cable for cracks or moisture once per season. You can easily protect the connector from corrosion with contact spray and a protective cap.
