Do I need a license for a fixed-mount VHF radio on my recreational boat?
Yes. You need a Ship Station Radio Certificate (VHF-SRC) as an operator's license and a frequency assignment (ship's radio station) for the device itself. The MMSI number is applied for separately at the Federal Network Agency.
What does MMSI mean and where do I enter it?
The MMSI is a nine-digit identification number for the digital DSC emergency call. It is programmed once in the device menu – the procedure differs depending on the manufacturer but is described in the manual. Changes are only possible to a limited extent, so enter it carefully.
How do I connect the radio to my chartplotter for automatic GPS position transmission?
Most fixed-mount devices have an NMEA-0183 input (often 4-pin). A simple data cable from the GPS output of the plotter is sufficient so that the current position is automatically transmitted with a DSC emergency call. Newer devices also offer NMEA-2000 connectivity, which then requires a suitable backbone connection.
What protection class should a handheld radio have at a minimum for use at sea?
IPX7 is the maritime standard – this means waterproof when temporarily submerged up to one meter deep. For use in a life jacket or in rough weather, it should be at least this class; some devices also meet IPX8.
