Do I need DSC if I only navigate inland waterways?
On many inland waterways, DSC is not mandatory but makes sense. On federal waterways with mandatory radio, channel 10 or 16 applies – a DSC-capable device is never a disadvantage there and is a real advantage in an emergency.
What does IPX7 mean for handheld radios?
IPX7 means protection against immersion in water up to one meter deep for a maximum of 30 minutes. For deck use, this is the recommended minimum – in rough weather or while sailing, a device can quickly end up in the water.
Can I legally operate a VHF handheld radio without a license?
For operation at sea and on waterways with mandatory radio, you need a recognized radio operating certificate (e.g., SRC) and approval for the radio equipment. On inland areas without mandatory radio, different rules may apply – check this for your area.
