For permanent use in areas exposed to splashing water, at least IPX6 or a comparable specification in the data sheet is recommended. Pure moisture protection classes are not sufficient there.
Can I use a standard wall clock with a quartz movement on a sailboat?
Only to a limited extent: Standard clocks are usually not protected against salt air and condensation. Specially declared ship's clocks have sealed cases and corrosion-resistant materials that can better withstand this in everyday use.
Which case materials can withstand saltwater long-term?
Stainless steel and coated brass are considered proven. Pure aluminum without anodizing and chrome-plated surfaces can corrode or tarnish with continuous salt exposure.
