What is the difference between an immersion suit and a survival suit?
An immersion suit (ISO 15027-1) is designed for quick donning and provides protection during short exposure to water. A survival suit (ISO 15027-3 or SOLAS) is fully insulated, keeps you warm longer, and is designed for extended periods in the water – but it also comes with more weight and bulk.
How quickly do I need to be able to put on a survival suit?
SOLAS suits are designed so that a trained person can put them on alone in a maximum of two minutes. Practice donning it regularly on board – ideally on the way to your berth, not just during a storm.
Can I wear a survival suit over a life jacket?
That depends on the suit. Some survival suits already have integrated buoyancy, while others are designed for use with a separate life jacket. Read the product description carefully and check the combination for compatibility before use.
How long does a survival suit last and when should I replace it?
There is no legally defined maximum lifespan for recreational sailors, but manufacturers generally recommend a professional inspection every two to three years. Visible damage to seams, zippers, or seals is a clear sign that replacement is needed – when in doubt, it's better to replace it sooner rather than wait too long.
