How do I measure the correct toggle for my fitting?
The crucial factors are the pin diameter of the existing fitting and the clear width of the jaw into which the toggle will be installed. Measure both with calipers before ordering – manufacturer specifications on the boat do not always match the part actually installed.
Does the breaking load of the toggle need to match the shroud load?
Yes. The toggle is the weakest link in the chain if it is undersized. The specified breaking load should at least match that of the connected wire or terminal – when in doubt, choose one size larger.
Can I use stainless steel toggles with brass terminals?
In humid, salty air, direct contact between different metals can cause galvanic corrosion. If you install stainless steel toggles on brass fittings, regular inspection is mandatory – or you can choose bronze throughout for this connection point.
How do I know when a toggle needs to be replaced?
Visible cracks, severe corrosion on the pin, noticeable play in the joint beyond the design specification, or a surface that feels rough and makes the toggle stiff are clear signs for replacement. When in doubt: This part is inexpensive – the rigging is not.
