Which materials are best suited for outdoor textiles on a boat?
Polyester and acrylic fabrics are the most common outdoor materials because they are saltwater and UV resistant. It is important that the manufacturer explicitly states UV stabilization – not every plastic can withstand intense sunlight over several seasons.
How do I know if a boat cover or tarpaulin fits my boat?
In addition to the model and year of manufacture of your boat, you need the exact dimensions of the area to be covered – length, width, and for tarpaulins, the shape of the cockpit. Model-specific cuts fit better than universal sizes and prevent the cover from chafing or slipping off in the wind.
Can I machine wash boat textiles?
Many technical textiles can be machine washed, but only at low temperatures and without fabric softener, which destroys the waterproofing. Check the care label of the respective product – some materials or sewn-on elements are only suitable for hand washing.
What should I look for in seams and fittings of boat textiles?
Seams should be double-stitched or flat-felled so that they do not tear under tension. All metal parts such as snaps, eyelets or carabiners must be made of stainless steel or plastic-coated material – normal steel rusts in a saltwater climate within a few weeks and also leaves rust stains on the fabric.
