How do I know which shackle size fits my rope?
As a rule of thumb: the inside diameter of the shackle bow should be approximately the same as the rope's cross-section, so that the rope lies neatly and does not twist. If in doubt, take the rope with you for comparison or measure the diameter in millimeters.
Do I have to secure the shackle pin after closing?
Yes, absolutely. Under changing loads, an unsecured pin will eventually work its way loose. Securing options include seizing with a thin line, a piece of wire through the hole in the pin, or special safety clips – depending on what the pin allows for.
Can I combine stainless steel shackles directly with brass fittings?
You should avoid this if possible, because different metals can cause galvanic corrosion in a humid environment. If it cannot be avoided, electrical separation with a plastic washer or bushing between the parts helps.
How do I know when a shackle needs to be replaced?
