What type of shackle is best suited for an anchor rode?
Swivel shackles are recommended for anchor rodes because they prevent the line from twisting due to current and tide. For the connection between chain and line, a solid D-shackle or bow shackle made of A4 stainless steel is the safe choice.
How do I know what shackle size matches my rope?
The width of the shackle opening should be chosen so that the rope fits snugly but without force. As a rule of thumb, the shackle pin diameter should be approximately equal to the rope diameter – the exact details can be found in the product description of the respective shackle.
Do stainless steel shackles need maintenance, or can they remain permanently installed?
Even A4 stainless steel can suffer in saltwater due to deposits and galvanic corrosion, especially when it comes into contact with other metals. Unscrew the pin at least once per season, clean the thread, and lightly grease it with acid-free grease so that it can be loosened in an emergency.
How do I reliably secure a shackle pin against unintentional opening?
Tighten the pin completely, then secure it with a piece of seizing twine or thin rope passed through the hole in the pin head and lashed to the shackle body. Adhesive tape or heat shrink tubing alone are not sufficient security under dynamic load.
