What is the difference between a swivel shackle and a regular shackle?
A swivel shackle has a rotating joint between the bow and the pin, which prevents twisting in the running rigging or sail. It is used wherever ropes or halyards could twist under load.
Can I connect stainless steel special shackles directly to aluminum fittings?
You should avoid this, as contact corrosion occurs between stainless steel and aluminum. In such situations, it's better to use bronze shackles or separate the materials with an insulating layer.
How do I know if a snap shackle is suitable for load-bearing connections?
Plastic snap shackles are not designed for load-bearing connections. Only metal models with a stated breaking load and a secured closure pin may be used in the rigging or anchor gear.
