What is the difference between a bearing compass and a normal steering compass?
A bearing compass has a sighting device that allows you to read the bearing to an object while aiming at it. A steering compass is permanently installed and continuously shows the boat's course – it is not suitable for taking bearings.
Can I use a hiking compass from land on a boat?
For short periods, yes, but land compasses are often not dampened for the movements of a boat – the needle swings too much and is difficult to read. For regular onboard use, a specially dampened marine compass is worthwhile.
How do I know if the damping fluid in my compass is still in good condition?
If you see air bubbles in the compass housing or the needle reacts sluggishly and jerkily, the fluid is defective or has leaked out. You should replace such devices, as readability and accuracy suffer greatly.
How far do I need to keep a hand compass away from metallic objects to get correct bearings?
As a rule of thumb, at least 30 cm distance from metal and electronic devices, and preferably more for larger metal masses such as anchors or winches. Take bearings as far forward as possible on the foredeck or aft, where interference fields are minimal.
