What cable cross-section do I need between the solar module and the controller?
That depends on the short-circuit current of the module and the cable length. As a rule of thumb: keep line losses below two percent and use at least the minimum cross-section specified by the module manufacturer – for longer distances, it is better to choose one size larger.
Can I operate a 24V module on a 12V electrical system?
Yes, but only with a suitable MPPT controller that regulates the higher module voltage down to the battery voltage. A simple PWM controller will not work correctly in this combination.
Are standard MC4 connectors suitable for use on water?
MC4 connectors are splash-proof but not permanently submersible. On deck, you should lay the connections in such a way that no standing water can accumulate, and regularly check them for corrosion.
How do I handle the solar system when winterizing?
Disconnect the module from the controller if the boat is left unattended for an extended period and there is no battery monitoring. Treat connectors with a moisture-displacing agent and store them covered so that no UV light permanently affects unprotected cables.
