Can I use normal household cleaner to clean my sail?
That's not advisable. Many household cleaners contain solvents or bleach, which can damage sail coatings and make sewing thread brittle. It's better to use products specifically designed for sails.
How do I remove mildew stains from a Dacron sail?
Use a special mildew remover for sails, apply it to the damp stain, and let it soak in. Then, loosen it with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly with clear water – do not rub dry, as this will only spread spores further.
Do I need to clean a laminate sail differently from a Dacron sail?
Yes, laminates are more sensitive to mechanical stress and certain solvents. Avoid abrasive brushes and check if the cleaning product is explicitly approved for laminates. Gentle pressure and sufficient soaking time will replace hard scrubbing.
When does it make sense to impregnate a sail after cleaning?
If a cleaned sail no longer repels water but soaks it up, the original impregnation is worn out. A new treatment is then worthwhile – but only once the fabric is completely clean and dry, otherwise the impregnation will not hold well.
