What is the difference between a flush-mount and a surface-mount compass?
Flush-mount compasses are built flush into a bulkhead or console and require a cut-out hole of the appropriate size. Surface-mount compasses are screwed onto a flat surface and are easier to retrofit – the installation effort is significantly lower, but they sit higher.
How do I correctly calibrate the compass after installation?
Most sailing compasses have two adjustable compensating magnets for north-south and east-west deviation. You steer successively on known courses and turn the magnets to minimize deviation – ideally on calm water with little motor running nearby. Any residual declination should be noted down as a deviation table.
Does a bubble in the damping fluid render the compass unusable?
Small bubbles often form due to temperature changes and sometimes disappear on their own. A larger, permanently visible bubble impairs rose stability and should be remedied by the manufacturer's service – refilling yourself is usually not intended and can compromise the seal.
Can I use the same compass in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres?
Not without further ado. Compasses are balanced for specific latitude zones because the Earth's magnetism dips differently depending on the hemisphere. If you are planning a passage across the equator, you will need a model that is explicitly compensated for the entire globe or the target hemisphere.
