How do I find the right screw terminal for my wire?
The decisive factor is the outer diameter of the wire rope in millimeters – this must exactly match the specification on the terminal. In addition, you need to check the thread on the shaft so that the terminal fits your existing turnbuckle.
Can I install a screw terminal myself or do I need a shipyard?
Installation is possible without special machinery, but requires careful work: the wire must be fully and correctly inserted into the cone. If in doubt, have a rigger approve the first installation and then do it yourself.
Stainless steel, brass or bronze – what is best suited on board?
For standing rigging, A4 stainless steel is the usual choice because it is seawater resistant and dimensionally stable. Brass and bronze are less commonly used in rigging but may match the rest of the fitting pattern on certain classic boats.
How often should I replace screw terminals?
There is no general service life, but visible corrosion, hairline cracks in the wire at the terminal entry, or an uneven fit are clear signs for replacement. Many owners prophylactically replace the standing rigging including terminals every 8 to 10 years.
