What material is best suited for rub rails at the waterline?
For constant contact with water, V4A stainless steel is recommended as it does not form rust stains even with saltwater. Brass and bronze are also proven but require regular maintenance or an acceptance of patina.
Can I screw stainless steel rub rails directly onto an aluminum hull or superstructure?
You should avoid this because direct metal-to-metal contact between stainless steel and aluminum causes galvanic corrosion. Place an insulating tape or a plastic shim between the profile and the substrate.
How do I bend a metal profile around a rounded bow edge without it breaking?
Every profile has a minimum bending radius, which depends on the material and the profile height. Bend gradually and evenly, preferably with a bending tool or a template. Too abrupt pressure will crack the profile or distort the drill holes.
Do I absolutely have to use sealant when screwing on a rub rail?
Yes, a marine-grade sealant should be used at every screw point. Without sealing, every drill hole will draw water into the laminate or wood, which will lead to osmosis or rot in the long term.
