What material is best suited for hinges in saltwater environments?
Stainless steel A4 is the most robust choice for continuous use in saltwater and UV exposure. Brass and bronze are also suitable for seawater and are particularly recommended for wooden boats or when galvanic corrosion due to material mix is a concern.
How do I correctly measure an existing hinge to find a suitable replacement?
Measure the overall length and width of the hinge, but most importantly, the hole spacing of the mounting holes – this value determines whether a replacement fitting will fit without modifications. Also, note the material thickness of the leaf if space is tight.
Can I use regular hardware store hinges on board?
