What IP rating do I need for a switch panel in the cockpit?
In the cockpit or other areas exposed to splash water, you should plan for at least IP56. For fully protected recesses below deck, IP44 is often sufficient, but higher is never a bad idea on the water.
How do I correctly measure the installation space for a new switch panel?
Measure the front opening (width x height), but also be sure to measure the available installation depth behind the panel. Many switch panels require 60–80 mm depth just for cable terminals and fuse holders – this value is missing in some manufacturer specifications.
Can I simply replace an existing switch panel with a larger one?
Basically yes, but you will need to enlarge the front opening accordingly and check if the existing cables are long enough. Also consider whether the new panel offers compatible connector types for your existing cable cross-sections.
Why do switches on switch panels corrode so quickly, and what helps against it?
Salt air and condensation attack unlacquered metal contacts within a few seasons. Regularly spraying the switches and terminals with contact spray and covering unused openings with blanking plugs significantly extends their lifespan.
