How do I know what size shackle I need?
The crucial factors are the inner diameter of the bow (must fit the connecting component, e.g., chain link or eyelet) and the stated breaking load. Always compare the shackle's breaking load with that of the weakest link in the entire connection chain, and allow for a sufficient safety factor.
Do I need to secure shackles on the anchor chain?
Yes, absolutely. Under the alternating tension when anchoring, an unsecured pin can unscrew. Tighten the pin hand-tight and then secure it with seizing wire, which is passed through the hole in the pin and around the bow.
Is a stainless steel shackle always better than galvanized steel?
For permanent use on saltwater, stainless steel has a clear advantage because zinc coatings corrode over time and attack the steel underneath. Galvanized steel can be useful for temporary or land-based applications, but it should not be used in areas of a sailing yacht that are permanently exposed to water.
What should I do if a shackle pin is seized?
Apply penetrating oil and then carefully loosen it with a suitable tool (coin or shackle key) – never use pipe pliers, as this will damage the pin head. If the shackle is heavily corroded, it's better to replace it than to continue using it; a shackle that breaks under load can be dangerous.
