Iridium uses a global network of low-Earth orbit satellites and offers complete worldwide coverage – including the polar regions. Inmarsat systems, on the other hand, have gaps in high latitudes.
How much power does a satellite terminal consume in continuous operation?
That depends on the device and operating mode. Many terminals consume a few watts in standby, and significantly more in active transmission mode. Check the technical specifications of the respective device and factor the consumption into your onboard power budget.
Can I use the satellite terminal as a Wi-Fi router for the whole crew?
Many current terminals have an integrated router function and distribute the connection as Wi-Fi. However, the available bandwidth is limited depending on the system – it's good enough for email and messaging, but usually not for video streaming.
Do I absolutely need a professional for the installation of the antenna and terminal?
