Roller or Brush – when to use which?

Foam rollers are well-suited for applying antifouling to large areas such as the hull and keel: They apply evenly and absorb viscous paints well. For edges, the waterline, through-hulls, and tight spots on the hull, you won't get far without a brush. For paints with high flow properties, a short-nap roller can work more cleanly than a brush – here it's worth checking the paint manufacturer's recommendation.

What to consider with materials?

Solvent-based boat paints attack many standard materials. Make sure that rollers and brushes are explicitly suitable for solvent-based products – this is usually stated on the packaging. Cheap brushes lose bristles in the paint, which means rework. Good synthetic brushes are sufficient for single-component paints; for two-component paints, natural hair or specially coated synthetic fiber brushes are recommended.

Accessories that make a difference

Masking tape, paint trays with roller grids, stirring spatulas, brush cleaner, and protective fleece are not minor matters. Anyone working on the underwater hull also needs suitable protective gloves and respiratory protection – this is part of the basic equipment, not an optional extra. A telescopic pole for the roller saves your back and time when working on the hull.

Cleaning and Reuse

Rollers for antifouling are usually disposed of after application – given the composition of most products, this makes more sense than elaborate cleaning. Good brushes, however, are worth cleaning: immediately after work, with the thinner matching the paint, and then washing out with soap and water. Dry them hanging or lying down, not standing on the bristles.
