For coastal sailing in the Baltic Sea, a 150N lifejacket is the usual recommendation because it reliably turns an unconscious person onto their back and help is usually available within a short time. Anyone who is out in stronger winds and further offshore should consider 275N.
How often does the CO₂ cartridge of an inflatable lifejacket have to be replaced?
The expiry date is stamped directly on the cartridge; many manufacturers specify three to five years. Regardless of this, you should check the cartridge annually for corrosion on the thread and leaks, and replace it immediately after each activation.
Can children wear a smaller adult lifejacket?
No. Children's lifejackets are specifically designed for lower body weight and smaller body proportions so that they do not ride up in the water and keep the head safely above water. Always buy a lifejacket that is expressly approved for the child's weight.
What do I need to do with my lifejacket after contact with saltwater?
Rinse the entire lifejacket thoroughly with fresh water – especially the buckles, zippers, and the activation unit – and let it air dry completely before storing it. Damp lifejackets form mold and salt crystals can corrode metal parts.
