What buoyancy class do I need for trips outside coastal waters?
For offshore and high seas navigation, a life jacket with at least 150 N buoyancy (ISO 12402-3) is generally recommended. For areas far from the coast and in poor self-rescue conditions, 275-N life jackets are the safer choice.
Do I have to register my EPIRB, and if so, where?
Yes, every EPIRB and PLB must be registered with the national maritime rescue service – in Germany, with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Bremen). Without registration, no clear assignment to the boat can be made in an emergency.
How often do I have to replace the firing mechanism of my life jacket?
The replacement interval is stated on the cartridge itself and varies depending on the manufacturer, but is usually one to three years. In addition, check the trigger pill for integrity – it reacts to water contact and can be used prematurely due to moisture.
Am I allowed to keep expired signaling devices on board?
Expired pyrotechnics may not be carried as approved safety equipment and must be disposed of properly. Many ports and bases offer collection points for old signaling devices – just ask at your home port.
