Standard, buoyancy, area of application – what matters when choosing

Safety equipment is subject to clear regulations. Life jackets, for example, are classified into buoyancy classes according to ISO standards – which class you need depends on your sailing area. Different requirements apply to coastal cruising up to 12 nautical miles than to offshore regattas or an Atlantic crossing. Also, check whether your insurance or the organizer of a regatta prescribes certain designs.

Fit and comfort are not secondary matters

A life jacket that is uncomfortable will not be worn – especially during long watches. Pay attention to adjustable straps, compatibility with safety lines and harness systems, and ensure that the jacket fits even over thick foul-weather gear. Lifebuoys, throw lines, and MOB markers should be mounted within easy reach, not stowed away.

Maintenance and durability

Automatic triggers in life jackets have an expiry date – check the cartridges and trigger pills before each season. Signaling devices such as smoke flares or pyrotechnic lights have a printed expiry date, which is legally relevant. Store everything dry and accessible, check gas fillings, and document inspection dates.

EPIRBs and PLBs must be registered with the relevant maritime rescue service – without registration, locating them in an emergency is significantly more difficult. Also, have the devices serviced by the manufacturer at the recommended intervals.
