Can I use normal household cleaners on my gelcoat?
Better not. Many all-purpose cleaners contain solvents or surfactants that can dull or make gelcoat porous over time. Use cleaners specifically developed for GRP – they dissolve salt, algae, and deposits without damaging the surface.
Which brush is suitable for the waterline without scratching the hull?
For the waterline, medium-stiff brushes with plastic bristles are recommended – soft enough for gelcoat, hard enough for algae growth and limescale streaks. Steel brushes are almost never useful on board, except on bare steel or raw iron.
Am I allowed to let cleaning agents drain into the water directly in the harbor?
That depends on the product and the harbor. Many harbors and protected waters require biodegradable cleaners. Pay attention to the product labeling and collect the wash water if possible – especially for bilge cleaners and degreasers.
How do I remove rust and dirt streaks on the topsides without scrubbing for hours?
Allow special waterline cleaners or rust removers to work briefly – then most streaks can be wiped off with little pressure. Important: do not apply in direct sunlight, as many cleaners will otherwise dry too quickly and become streaky.
