This varies depending on the model – typically between 6 and 14 mm. You can find the recommended rope diameter in the respective product description. A rope that is too thin can slip, while one that is too thick will jam and damage the mechanism.
Can I use a ratchet block as a normal fairlead block?
Many ratchet blocks can be switched to free-running – in which case the block behaves like a regular fairlead block. Models without this function only ratchet in one pulling direction, which can make hauling in the other direction difficult.
How often do I need to maintain the bearings of a ratchet block?
After intensive saltwater use, rinse the block with fresh water. Ball bearings benefit from an occasional drop of bearing oil – how often depends on the intensity of use. Plain bearings require less maintenance but should be checked for dirt and sand deposits.
How do I attach a ratchet block to the deck if there is no suitable pad-eye?
