Deine Fragen / Unsere Antworte
- What is the minimum IP rating a marine radio needs?
- For open use in the cockpit or at the helm, at least IPX5 is recommended, with IPX6 being better. IPX5 protects against water jets from all directions, while IPX6 also protects against stronger water jets – relevant for heavy rain or spray when underway.
- How do I measure if a speaker will fit into my existing cutout?
- Measure the diameter of the cutout and the mounting depth behind the panel to the next obstruction. Compare both with the manufacturer's specifications for the cutout diameter and mounting depth of the speaker – both measurements must fit, not just the front diameter.
- Can I use a standard car radio on a boat?
- Only to a limited extent: car radios are not designed for salt air and condensation and, based on experience, corrode quickly on board. For occasional inland use, it might work, but on a sailboat or in coastal waters, you should opt for a genuine marine radio.
- What type of cable should I use for the onboard wiring of an audio system?
- Use tinned, multi-strand copper cable that is specifically designated for maritime or marine applications. Untinned standard cable oxidizes in humid salt air on every single copper strand, increasing the contact resistance – this not only sounds worse but can also become a heat source in case of a fault.
