A true red light lamp uses red LEDs that do not impair the eye's dark adaptation. Many inexpensive models merely dim white light or use a red cover – this is significantly less effective. For use on the water, the lamp should also be splash-proof.
Do navigation lights have to meet a certain range of visibility?
Yes, the COLREGs (Collision Regulations) prescribe minimum ranges of visibility depending on the size of the vessel – different requirements apply to sailing boats under 20 meters than to larger vessels. The exact values are set out in Rule 22 of the COLREGs and should be compared with the technical specifications of the light manufacturer before purchase.
How do I maintain navigation lights to keep them watertight?
Seals and O-rings should be checked for cracks once a season and lightly treated with acid-free grease. Screw connections and cable glands are common weak points – regular tightening and corrosion protection at the contacts significantly extend their lifespan.

Yes, UV radiation and mechanical stress cause reflective material to become duller over the years. Most manufacturers specify a service life of five to seven years, but visible clouding or detaching edges are clear signs that a replacement is necessary – regardless of age.
