Red light preserves the dark adaptation of your eyes, allowing you to better see navigational aids and other vessels. White light should only be used briefly and specifically in the cockpit.
Does my headlamp need to be waterproof for night sailing?
Yes, splash protection according to IPX4 or better is the minimum at sea. For longer trips or rainy weather, a protection class that can withstand brief submersion is recommended.
How long should navigation lights illuminate at a minimum to comply with regulations?
The COLREGs do not prescribe a minimum burning duration, but they do require that lights can be operated continuously as long as the vessel is underway. Spare batteries or a second power source are therefore not a precaution, but a requirement.
What should I pay particular attention to regarding life jackets and safety lines for night sailing?
Look for integrated or retrofittable strobe lights and reflective strips – a person in the water is almost impossible to find in the dark without these aids. Automatic inflation and a safety harness with a lifeline attachment are particularly important at night.
