How do I measure which cleat fits my deck?
Measure the hole spacing of the existing drill holes or the old cleat, the outer diameter of the base, and the deck thickness at the installation location. If you are planning a backing block, add its thickness to the deck thickness to ensure the correct screw length.
Is A2 stainless steel sufficient, or do I need A4 for saltwater use?
For permanent use at sea or in coastal waters, A4 is clearly the better choice. A2 can develop pitting corrosion in aggressive saltwater environments over time, especially on screws and welds.
Which sealant should I use under the cleat base?
Permanently elastic polysulfide or polyurethane sealants, suitable for GRP and aluminum, have proven effective. Silicones adhere poorly to many boat deck paints and are not a good choice. On wooden decks, the sealant should be compatible with wood.
Can I retroactively mount a cleat without a backing plate?
Technically yes, but not recommended: Without a backing plate or sufficiently large washers inside, the tensile load when mooring concentrates on small points in the deck and can damage GRP or wood in the long run. A simple stainless steel plate inside is quickly made and protects the deck construction.
