Where can I find the serial number of my Johnson or Evinrude outboard?
The serial number is located in different places depending on the model and year of manufacture – often on a sticker or plate on the transom bracket, on the gearcase, or inside the engine cover. Make a note of it before ordering parts, as many components are model-specific.
Are original parts still available for older OMC engines from the 1980s and 1990s?
For many models from this era, original parts are only available to a limited extent, as OMC ceased operations in 2000. However, high-quality compatible parts cover a large proportion of the demand. For every item, it is visible whether it is an original or a compatible part.
Can I use the same impeller for different horsepower variants of a Johnson engine?
Not necessarily – even engines with the same horsepower can have different cooling water pump housings and thus different impeller sizes. Check the part number against your serial number to ensure that the impeller really fits.
How often should I change the gearbox oil seal kit on my Evinrude outboard?
As a rule of thumb: change the gearbox oil annually or every 100 operating hours and check the seals at the same time. If water in the oil or discolouration appears when draining, the shaft seals should be replaced immediately – otherwise, there is a risk of bearing damage.
