What is the maximum length a single drop cable can be in an NMEA 2000 network?
The NMEA 2000 specification allows a maximum of 6 meters per drop cable. The total backbone length is also limited; consult the specifications of your chosen system, as light and mid-backbones have different limits.
Do I have to combine components from the same manufacturer, or are NMEA 2000 parts compatible with each other?
NMEA 2000 certified products are generally compatible across manufacturers. However, pay attention to the connector system used, as some manufacturers use their own locking geometries that require adapters.
Do I need a terminator at each end of the backbone?
Yes, both ends of the backbone must be terminated with a 120-ohm terminator. If a terminator is missing, signal reflections will occur, leading to sporadic failures of individual network participants.
Can I use a standard Cat-5e patch cable for the Ethernet connection between the chartplotter and radar?
Indoors and for short tests, this will work, but not for continuous use on deck or in damp areas. Marine Ethernet cables have a UV and saltwater resistant jacket and corrosion-proof connector contacts, which standard IT cables do not offer.
