Can I use regular household sewing thread for boat repairs?
It will work in the short term, but cotton or standard polyester threads without UV protection quickly lose strength on board due to moisture, salt, and sun. For anything that needs to last longer, special marine thread is worthwhile.
What thread thickness is suitable for repairing a heavy canvas cover?
For thick boat covers or canvas material, you should choose a strong thread and use a correspondingly strong hand sewing needle. A thread that is too thin will pull out of the seam under tension or tear when tightened.
What is the difference between twisted and braided sewing thread?
Twisted thread is easier to sew by hand and behaves controllably when tightening. Braided thread is often rounder in cross-section, lies more evenly in the seam, and is well-suited for machine work or particularly even hand seams.
Why is waxed hand sewing thread useful on board?
