What minimum distance must I maintain between a compass and electronic devices?
This depends on the specific device, but as a rule of thumb, maintain at least 30 cm from loudspeakers, control units, and electric motors. After installation, check with a separate handheld compass whether the deviation is acceptable, and then compensate the device.
What does it mean for a compass to be 'compensable'?
Compensable compasses have internal adjustment screws or magnets that allow you to largely offset the deviation caused by the boat on the main courses. This procedure is called deviation adjustment and should be repeated after installation and after any major changes on board.
Can I use a sailboat compass on my motorboat?
In principle, yes, if the installation size fits. However, many sailboat compasses are designed for lower speeds and smoother movements – on a motorboat in waves, the rose may swing more and be harder to read. A model with higher damping would then be the better choice.
What does bubbling in the compass fluid mean and do I need to replace the compass then?
A bubble forms when compass fluid has leaked out through a faulty seal. This noticeably impairs damping and readability. In most cases, repair is not economical – the device should be replaced.
