Yes, brass is saltwater-resistant, but should be rinsed regularly with fresh water. However, for permanently submerged or safety-critical applications, stainless steel is recommended.
How do I determine the correct shackle size for my rope?
The nominal size of a shackle refers to the diameter of the bail and should match the diameter of the rope or chain to be attached. Measure the rope or chain diameter before purchasing and choose a shackle whose clear width comfortably accommodates the connecting link.
Can I combine brass shackles with stainless steel parts?
Generally, yes, but direct contact between brass and stainless steel in a damp environment can cause galvanic corrosion, as both metals have different electrochemical potentials. If possible, separate the metals with a plastic or rubber washer.
