What is the difference between an impeller log and an ultrasonic log?
An impeller log measures speed via a rotating paddlewheel transducer in the hull – it’s inexpensive and widely used, but susceptible to fouling and debris. An ultrasonic log has no moving parts and requires less maintenance, but is more expensive to purchase.
Can I change my log transducer in the water without lifting the boat?
Yes, if your transducer has a removable cassette with a seacock. You close the valve, replace the transducer, and open it again – this does not require slipping the boat. Before purchasing, check whether the model supports this function.
My log is showing an incorrect speed – what could be the reason?
The most common cause is a dirty impeller or one covered in marine growth. Clean the transducer and check if the impeller rotates freely. If the deviation remains constant afterwards, the log can be corrected on most displays using a calibration factor.
Will a combi transducer for speed and depth work with my existing chartplotter?
That depends on the signal standard. Most modern chartplotters process NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 – check your display's manual to see what inputs are available, and choose the transducer with the appropriate output. An NMEA 0183 to 2000 converter resolves incompatibilities if necessary.
