What IP rating do I need for a socket in the cockpit?
For the cockpit area, at least IP56 is recommended, meaning protection against strong jets of water from all directions. If the socket regularly needs to withstand splashes or occasional submersion, you should opt for IP67.
Can I use a normal household dimmer for my boat's electrical system?
No. Household dimmers are designed for 230V AC, while boat electrical systems usually run on 12V or 24V DC. For marine LEDs, you need a DC-compatible marine dimmer that matches the load rating of your lights.
Are Schuko sockets permitted on boats?
Schuko sockets may only be used in the 230V shore power circuit and must be protected by an RCD. They have no place in 12V or 24V on-board electrical systems, as other plug formats are required there.
How do I prevent switch housings and contacts from rusting?
Choose housings made of UV-stable plastic or stainless steel, and treat exposed contacts with a contact protection spray after each season. Also, check the mounting seals annually and replace hardened or cracked rubber seals.
