Which regulator do I need for an AGM battery?
For AGM batteries, you need a regulator with an adapted charging curve that precisely limits the voltage. A simple standard regulator for wet lead-acid batteries usually charges AGMs with too high a float voltage, significantly shortening their lifespan.
Can I install a more powerful alternator without changing the cables?
Not always. The cable cross-section between the alternator and the battery must match the maximum current. If the existing cross-section is too small, inadmissible heating will occur – in doubt, the supply line must be replaced, or the alternator's output must be limited.
How do I check if my alternator is still charging sufficiently?
Measure the voltage directly at the battery terminals with the engine running and typical onboard load. If it consistently falls below the charging voltage range specified for your battery type, the alternator is not supplying enough power – or the regulator is defective.
How often should I check the carbon brushes of an alternator?
A visual inspection before each season is advisable, but at the latest after a few hundred operating hours. Heavily worn brushes lead to irregular charging and can damage the slip ring surface, which results in a more extensive repair.
