How do I determine the correct inner diameter for my fairlead?
Measure the outer diameter of the thickest line that will pass through the fairlead, and choose an inner diameter that is approximately 20–30% larger. This provides enough clearance for wet, swollen lines and prevents the line from snagging or chafing.
When is a fairlead with a roller bearing worthwhile instead of a simple round eye?
Wherever a line is frequently moved under load – such as with sheets or halyards – a roller bearing significantly reduces abrasion. For lines or ropes that are only adjusted occasionally, a simple eye is perfectly adequate.
Which sealant is suitable for installing a fairlead on deck?
For GRP decks, polyurethane sealant has proven effective, as it adheres well and retains a certain elasticity. For wooden decks, polysulfide-based products are recommended. Silicones should generally be avoided on deck, because subsequent bonds will no longer adhere to them.
Can I retrofit a recessed fairlead on an existing deck?
Yes, this is possible but requires careful work: the recess must be precisely routed or drilled, and the cut edges in the GRP or wood must be sealed before the fairlead is inserted to prevent water infiltration into the core material.
