What IP rating do I need for cockpit speakers?
For openly mounted positions in the cockpit or on deck, at least IPX5 is recommended, which protects against water jets from any direction. In places regularly exposed to direct water jets, you should choose IPX6.
How do I measure if a speaker fits my boat?
You need three measurements: the outer diameter of the speaker, the required cutout diameter, and the mounting depth behind the panel. The mounting depth, in particular, is often underestimated – measure it carefully before enlarging or cutting a new hole.
Can I use regular home speakers on a boat?
They will work short-term, but the baskets, cones, and grilles of home speakers are not designed for salt air, UV radiation, and moisture. Corrosion and material fatigue occur much faster than with marine speakers – after one season, you'll see the difference.
How do I prevent resonances when installing a subwoofer?
The subwoofer needs a stable, sealed enclosure that is firmly attached to the boat's hull and has no loose parts. A fiberglass hull transmits vibrations very well, so you should decouple the enclosure with dampening inserts and regularly retighten all screw connections.
