How do I determine the correct length and stiffness for a replacement batten?
Use the old batten as a reference and also measure the batten pocket in the sail – the length and clear width of the pocket are crucial. The stiffness should match the original; deviations will alter the sail profile and stress the pocket seam.
Are batten fittings and end pieces universal or mast-specific?
That depends on the type of attachment. Swivel fittings for mast grooves are not universal – groove width and groove depth vary depending on the mast profile. Before purchasing, check the groove geometry of your mast and compare it with the product specifications.
Can I convert partial batten pockets to full batten pockets afterwards?
Generally no – full batten pockets are longer and reinforced differently than partial batten pockets. A conversion is a job for a sailmaker who will replace the pockets and adjust the leech accordingly.
How do I prevent tensioning screws on batten fittings from corroding?
Before the season, treat tensioning screws and threads sparingly with a saltwater-resistant lubricant or Teflon paste. At the end of the season, rinse the fittings with fresh water, let them dry, and grease them lightly again – this keeps the parts moving smoothly and significantly extends their lifespan.
