Are plastic shackles suitable for load-bearing applications on the rigging?
Plastic shackles are generally not suitable for highly dynamically loaded areas such as the main halyard or forestay. In light use – spinnaker equipment, tarpaulin fastenings or fender lines – they work reliably, provided the specified breaking load is adhered to.
How do I know if a plastic shackle needs to be replaced?
Visible hairline cracks on the bow or pin area, whitening under bending, and a stiff-running closure are clear indicators for replacement. Plastic often gives no early warning of failure – if in doubt, it's better to replace it.
What difference does UV-stabilized material make for plastic shackles?
Non-UV-stabilized plastic becomes brittle after a few seasons and breaks under load without warning. UV-stabilized shackles retain their toughness significantly longer – often recognizable from the product description or by the fact that the color does not fade.
Can I combine plastic shackles with metal shackles in one line?
Yes, this is common practice. Make sure that the plastic shackle is not the weakest link in a chain that will be subjected to higher overall loads. The breaking load of the plastic shackle then determines the load limit of the entire connection.
